John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America follows on from Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell’s 12-issue run in 2020-2021 and features the Alec Holland version of Swamp Thing.
Appearances that I consider to be fairly minor are indented. The below titles were published by DC Comics unless otherwise noted.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead In America (2024) #1
March 2024. DC Black Label.
Simon Spurrier [w], Aaron Campbell [p, c]
A few weeks after the events of John Constantine: Hellblazer (2020), Constantine, Nat and Noah are in Florida avoiding the English police. Constantine’s body is dead and has begun to decompose. He meets with a demon to negotiate for the soul of his damned son Noah, but another spirit in the form of a girl guide arrives and prevents Constantine from cheating the demon. John, Nat and Noah travel in a double-decker bus westward. Constantine is visited by Dream, who knows that John used some of the sands in his pouch (Sandman #3, Mar. 1989) and needs his help undoing other problems caused by Dream’s absence through much of the 20th Century. The British trio are pulled over by a cop but use a spell to immobilise him. They travel to a Louisiana bayou to find Swamp Thing but discover it has been transformed into a golf course and Swamp Thing has lost his memories.
Swamp Thing appears in the final panel.
Poison Ivy (2022) #19-#20
#19: “Chapter Nineteen”, April 2024
#20: “Chapter Twenty”, May 2024
G. Willow Wilson [w], Marcio Takara [p]
In #19, Ivy (Pamela Isley) is dying after Woodrue burst out of her body in the previous issue. Ivy recounts her past in a flashback. She attends college and meets her professor Jason Woodrue (who is researching plant/human hybridisation), and other students Philip Sylvain and Alec and Linda Holland. Pam and Linda collaborate on a research project until Woodrue becomes abusive and Pam starts a relationship with him. Woodrue introduces her to his secret laboratory and, when funding runs out, Woodrue manipulates Pamela into stealing supplies for the lab. In #20, the research continues and some of the plants are able to move around the lab by themselves, while Woodrue is dosing himself with an experimental formula. Pamela meets a new student Bella Garten and becomes jealous when she begins working in the lab too, but they begin a secret relationship. Pam is introduced to Bella’s own secret research into animal/plant hybridisation but Woodrue (who has now partly transformed into a plant) finds out. Pam agrees to be a test subject for Woodrue.
These issues primarily consist of flashbacks to Ivy’s college days, and Alec and Linda Holland appear.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead In America (2024) #2
April 2024. DC Black Label.
Simon Spurrier [w], Aaron Campbell [p, c]
A policewoman who is following Constantine comes across the spellbound officer and slaughters him, then calls the police telling them that the murderers are in a bus. She also scares away a phantom hitchhiker who was earlier trying to get picked up by the bus. In New Orleans, Constantine meets with Clarice Sackville. She sends Nat and Noah on a mission to obtain a vampire’s heart, while Swamp Thing (who is being stored in a jar) grows psychedelic tubers for Clarice and John to eat and allow them to travel into a damaged Green. Swamp Thing begins to remember that he was lulled into abandoning his responsibilities by three women (including the figures who have taken the form of the girl guide and cop). Clarice admits that she is the Cumaean Sibyl of Greek legend, who was raped by Apollo but then given long life. Elsewhere, Nat and Noah witness a social media star being killed by a vampiric creature. The creature then returns to Clarice and de-ages her, and Clarice explains that her ancient gift of long life has run out and she is now staying alive by other means. Clarice refuses to help John. Noah and Nat arrive, hitting the vampire (Gwendolyn) with the bus, and Swamp Thing ultimately destroys it by growing inside it.

May 2024. DC Black Label.
Simon Spurrier [w], Aaron Campbell [p, c]
In Texas, a militia man waits in the desert for migrants illegally crossing the border and thinks about Pecos Bill, a legendary figure from the South. The man shoots a Mexican woman, which causes the vengeful ghost of grief, La Llorona, to attack but the man is defended my a trinity of American spirits. After all the spirits have fought, the man learns that the woman he shot has a daughter nearby. Though the spirits urge him to kill her, he instead helps her, and then invokes Pecos Bill in a final battle of ghosts that results in his death. In the same area, Clarice is withering away without the aid of her vampiric bodyguard and she recounts her life to Nat, explaining that she was imprisoned as an oracle for centuries until her body decayed and she was just a voice in a jar. In the 1950s, Dr. Diablo then purchased the jar and brought it to that desert to ask Clarice how to open Dream’s magical pouch of sand. Once open, he gave Clarice a grain of the sand to restore her body. In the present, Swamp Thing helps them to locate the jar and the grain of sand, which Constantine removes to help them track the rest of the sand. They come across the skeleton of the militia man (who had died there a few years previous) accompanied by a letter of thanks from the younger Mexican woman who has since become a doctor.

August 2024. DC Black Label.
Simon Spurrier [w], Aaron Campbell [p, c]
Swamp Thing communicates with Constantine via a dream, explaining that the sand is in Los Angeles, but that he has been detained. Dream also appears and explains that an emissary will soon meet and guide them. When Constantine awakens, a strange man boards the bus in Las Vegas who Constantine takes to be the emissary. They find themselves at a police traffic stop, but the guest changes the bus’s colour to black to avoid detection and Constantine recognises him as a metamancer – one who can control a story and can interact with other comic panels. Clarice and Nat identify the man as Iggy Ballat, a comic book and screen writer who was with Dr. Diablo in the desert in the 50s. Iggy also desires the remaining sand and tells stories about Hollywood scripts he wrote that never got made, and about his comic character The Toll. The trinity of spirits appear as The Toll and hold the group at gunpoint, but Constantine forces Iggy to eat the sand and feeds him to the spirits while the rest of them escape. John is shot, and they discover the hitchhiker (who they’d passed multiple times) sitting in the bus. The hitchhiker is revealed as Dr. Diablo (Elliot Garner) and the true emissary. Suddenly, Constantine and Diablo vanish.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead In America (2024) #7
September 2024. DC Black Label.
Simon Spurrier [w], Aaron Campbell [p]
Constantine and Diablo are in the Winchester Mystery House after having slept together. A month passes and Constantine is unable to locate the rest of his group. Diablo is missing his brain and some of his memories but attempts to recount the story of his life. In the 1930s he met T.S. Eliot, who was seeking the Cumaean Sybil again after having sold the jar to Roderick Burgess. Diablo became a psychologist to Hollywood stars, and obtained Dream’s pouch, and then regained the Sybil to advise him how to open it. He was later invited to the annual ceremony of the Bohemian Club in a grove of redwoods at Monte Rio. He failed to influence America’s leaders using the sands, so instead chose to empower the masses by making the leaders appear conspiratorial and cultish. Constantine takes Diablo to the redwoods and strangles him with the cord from Dream’s sand pouch, realising that Diablo sacrificed his infant child to be able to open the pouch. Constantine reasons that the three spirits could only partly destroy Diablo, with his important memories about the sand having followed that part of his soul to Hell. After having killed what was left of Diablo, Constantine ties himself to Diablo with the cord and follows him into hell. There they are greeted by Etrigan.
Swamp Thing is shown in a flashback at the Winchester Mystery House, which he visited in The Saga of Swamp Thing #45 (Feb. 1986).

Slade is re-hired to capture a monster that threatens to destroy Vandar’s kingdom, which is devoid of colour. Slade and Caitlyn travel to a temple where robed figures are protecting the “beast”, but Slade discovers that one of the fighters is his ex-wife Addie. He injures Caitlyn to save Addie and learns that the creature Addie is protecting is a young boy who is rendered in colour. In #2, Slade, Alec (the boy who brings colour to objects around him) and the injured Addie recover at an inn. Alec and Addie continue on their journey to Gyllenhjem but are confronted by Slade’s daughter Rose, who has taken up Slade’s abandoned mission. Slade joins the fight but Addie is killed and Alec must use his powers to fend off Rose. In #3, Slade decides to accompany Alec to Gyllenhjem himself, following the directive given to Alec by the Green. Slade has an altercation with a stranger named Prince Bruce (who resembles both Batman and Superman) but Alec breaks up the fight and Bruce joins them. In #4, Slade explains that the kingdom was thrown into a perpetual winter when the jealous magus Viktor (Mr. Freeze) found that King Maxwell (Lord) was flirting with Viktor’s wife Nora. Alec recounts that his family were killed by invaders and he sheltered in the swamp and encountered a guardian of the Green. On their journey, Bruce becomes weaker as he travels further away from sunlight, and he abandons the quest after he is injured in a battle. Later, Slade is attacked by Rose and Caitlyn and thrown out of a tower, while Solomon (Grundy) reports the recent events to his master Viktor. In #5, Slade is rescued by William Wintergreen and taken to his underground base. They decide to assassinate Viktor by burrowing underneath Gyllenhjem, but first must rescue Alec. They kill Caitlyn and present Rose with a book that describes how the kingdom fell into endless winter. It explains that Viktor hired Slade and Wintergreen to assassinate King Maxwell but they accidentally killed Nora, enraging Viktor. Rose decides to help them overthrow Viktor. In #6, the group fight their way into the castle and kill Solomon. They encounter Slade’s young sons (turned to zombie-like creatures by the Allwinter) and are then encased in ice by Viktor, who has also frozen Nora to keep her alive. Addie (resurrected by the Green) and Bruce arrive to help and they all fight Viktor. Alec ends the Allwinter using his powers and resurrects Nora, while Addie and Slade’s sons are also restored to health. Slade suggests that Alec become king.

The heroes come to a place where they can forge a new trident for Aquaman, helping to fulfill a prophecy whereby Aquaman will become a vessel for a god who will kill Dagon. While Arion and Vivienne are constructing the weapon, Aquaman is visited by Lori Lemaris who stabs him with a blade that causes him to freeze. He is then transported to Dagon.

Janet arrives and Ed breaks her back, so Ivy critically injures him. Ivy goes into the swamp and calls for Bog Venus to help heal Janet, offering to tell her what Xylon wants. Bog Venus notes that Janet is changing and heals her, while putting Ed out of his misery. Afterwards, Bog Venus takes Ivy into the Green for a conversation. Ivy insists that Xylon and the Grey want peace, but Bog Venus rejects this, insisting that the Grey must confess to its crimes. In #33: while Janet recovers, Ivy and Undine begin transforming Marshview. Later, Undine tells Ivy that Janet has a potentially fatal fungal infection from her exposure to the Lamia spores. Ivy considers how to get Janet treatment without alerting the police. Janet finds out about her illness and summons Bog Venus, who promises not to hurt Ivy if Janet can help separate Ivy from the influence of the Grey. Janet suggests that breaking the spell that hides Marshview from the world will expose Ivy and force her to leave. Meanwhile, Undine continues to work on improving the town but he and Ivy are interrupted by a police invasion. They find Janet and Ivy decides to fight back, asking Undine to seek help from the ecoterrorist group the Order of the Green Knight.

In #11, Orion and the New Gods offer to help Darkseid destroy all life on Earth. The surviving superheroes and vampires agree to make a final stand together against Darkseid, but Damien Wayne kills the vampire queen Batgirl, which causes the groups to fight until the New Gods arrive. Many humans flee in vehicles, and Spectre guides them to a haven that Swamp Thing has created that is hidden by magic. Damien addresses the group and speaks of a weapon that the vampires were working on to defend themselves against Darkseid. Harley Quinn recalls and recreates the weapon’s designs, which she saw when she was captive, and Wally West volunteers to power the machine. Elsewhere, Wonder Woman (Diana) fights the Furies and kills Gilotina. Now queen of the vampires, Spectre brings her to the new sanctuary too. Queen Diana agrees to help but only if Damien is punished, so the Green Lantern Alfred Pennyworth volunteers to kill him. In #12, humans and vampires leave Swamp Thing’s haven to await Darkseid’s forces, while Cyborg finishes the weapon. Instead of being executed, Damien has been secretly transported to the House of Mystery where he meets with Constantine and Doctor Fate. Avia is also present, as the heroes switched her with the human baby possessed by Deadman. Because time moves differently in the House of Mystery, Damien Wayne is able to train Avia as an assassin for many years. The final battle begins on Earth. The superheroes’ machine is used to make the vampire infection airborne, but it does not have the intended effect on their enemies. Swamp Thing merges with the vampire Mammoth and they sacrifice themselves so that the vampire infection is distributed within seeds, and this manages to kill the parademons and New Gods. Avia appears at the battle and kills Darkseid, but Wonder Woman immediately turns on the humans. Supergirl and Alfred fly away and alter the rotation of the Earth, bringing sunlight to the battlefield and killing most of the vampires.
